14/02/2026 - WNL 2025-26 - 7 - British Camp

Welcome to the penultimate Western Night League event of the season. This is a series of 60-minute score events in the local vicinity, taking place after dark in the winter - headtorches required! Each control in the forest, and in this case, on the hill, is worth a given number of points: score as many points as you can by visiting controls, and get back within the time limit to avoid late penalties.

We are grateful to the Malvern Hills Trust for the use of the are and to our friends form Harlequins Orienteering Club for arranging permissions.

Final Details

  • Note that the car park is pay and display: card payment possible. £6 for all day - car sharing encouraged! If you want to arrive earlier to get your money’s worth with a walk/run on the beautiful Malvern hills please stay north of the car park for obvious reasons. The kiosk opposite the car park should be open for a hot drink and there are public loos near by.
  • Note also that the A449 remains closed from Little Malvern (junction with A4104) to British Camp: please follow the diversions and allow extra travel time. From the north take the B4232 Jubilee Drive and from other directions A449 from Ledbury or A438 via Eastnor.
  • Please arrive in time for assembly at 17:30 - near mass start at 17:45. Course closes at 19:00.
  • Ensure you bring a waterproof as they may be compulsory due to the exposed nature of the area.
  • Pub of the night The Wellington Inn: link to menu below. Tables reserved for us from 19:30 - if you want to eat at the pub let me have your menu choice by Weds 11th Feb 5pm as we need to pre-order. (Pie is pheasant, bacon and mushroom)

Entries are open on Fabian4.co.uk and will close at midnight on Wednesday 11th February. Please note that touch free dibbing is disabled for this event, so if hiring a dibber do not select Touch Free hire.

Directions and Parking

The parking is at British Camp Car Park off the A449.

Nearest Postcode: WR13 6HR

Click on the Parking icon on the map below, and then the Direction icon icon to get directions to the course.

The Area

British Camp is an impressive Bronze Age hillfort: as you might expect there are steep ramparts and ditches, including the Shire Ditch which runs the length of the Malvern hills. The mapped area also features some flat (but always muddy) common land with scattered trees and thickets as well as wooded hillsides with many mountain bike tracks (most of which are mapped but you may find some smaller new paths). Wear shoes with a good grip!

The Map

The map is 1:10000 scales with 5m contours. Control descriptions printed on the map and available loose at Registration.

Start and Finish

Registration, Start and Finish are all in the car park.

Courses

Standard WNL 60 minute score course with 30 controls, with variable points value.

If all controls are visited within the time an extra 1 point per 6 seconds will be awarded. Penalty of 1 point for every 6 seconds late

We will use SI Timing, in contact mode only. All runners must punch the Start and Finish and all controls; this is for safety reasons. If you are hiring a dibber DO NOT select TF hire, as it costs more but will be ineffective for this race.

The 10 controls with a value of 10 points are of Yellow/Orange standard will allow a more simple course to be followed but there are other, higher value controls which you may wish to visit.

Spare headtorch and a whistle are compulsory. Leg cover strongly recommended.

Entry on the day is available only while maps last, but note the premium price to discourage this. EOD payment by cash only.

Refunds

The standard Fabian4 terms and conditions offer an automatic refund up to 2 months before the event date, and we do not normally vary this specification. That means that in most cases no refunds are possible, as we do not publish details until less than 2 months before the date of the event.
However, for all except large events we hold entries open until only a day or so before the event, so you can delay entry if unsure whether you can run, until very close to event day.

Dogs

Dogs are permitted on the courses, but must be ‘under control’.

Facilities

The pub of the night is The Wellington Inn, Chances Pitch, WR13 6HW. Less than 5 minutes drive from the event area but not walkable due to the busy A449 with no footway. I have booked a table for us - provisionally for 10 people: please let me know by 6th February of you plan to stay to eat: a menu for pre-booking your meal choice will be available soon.

Safety

As with all Western Night League events it is compulsory to carry a backup light and a whistle. It is advisable to carry a mobile phone too.

Orienteering is an adventure sport. All runners take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety.

A risk assessment has been completed, and a copy will be held at Enquiries and Download in case competitors wish to consult it before their run.

A first aid kit and trained first aiders will be available at Download.
