Wednesday 07/10/2026 - Ermin Street 2026
Please note the change of venue detailed in the Parking section. This due to the fact that the Mill Lane car is strictly for use of those using the playing fields, is locked at 19:30, and despite a chat with a very helpful lady in the Brockworth Parish Council the key person who can authorise our use and an extension is not available until next week, which is too late! I should have sorted this out sooner, but likewise have left it too late! Instead we have to use the car park at the big Tesco Extra superstore, so please go in and buy something while there!
Ermin Way or Ermin Street as it is known locally is the Roman Road that ran from Gloucester(Glevum), via Cirencester (Corinium) to Silchester (Calleva Atrebatum), a little way North of present day Basingstoke. It's not to be confused with Ermine Street which ran from London to York. Nowadays it's the long straight stretch of road encompassing Barnwood Road and Hucclecote, and we will in general be running across it rather than along it, visiting Brockworth, Hucclecote and Cooper's Edge. It's maybe a little early to be having a fully urban race, but the darker evenings are fast approaching and anyone starting moderately late may be finishing in the dusk.
Important: Please also note that as from 1 January 2026 Non-members of British Orienteering are not insured under British Orienteering’s public liability policy. By entering this event, you acknowledge that you are participating at your own risk.
Entries are now open and will close at midnight on Tuesday 6th October .

Directions and Parking
Please note the change of venue, due to problems with permissions for the Mill Lane car park.
Parking is in the Tesco Xtra car park. This has a 3 hour limit, so make sure you can turn up and run within that time. I will be parked as shown by the Assembly marker (tent) on the map. Drive past the fuel station, and as you swing round into the car park take the left turning and I'll be parked in the double row with trees down the middle, just after the car park entry.

The Area
Usual Gloucester mix of older and newer residential housing, surrounding a large industrial/business area with few through routes. Having moved the parking and start/finish to Tesco, we are now surrounded by some major roads and roundabouts, where extreme care will be needed, particularly for earlier starters. The course is planned such that you can leave on your run without having to negotiate any of the busier of these, and likewise can return without having to cross too many major routes. As a result, and also following a check of most of the course, which revealed some mapped paths no longer being usable, the central business/industrial area contains no controls, and the course is something of a 'donut' around this large central complex. The challenge will be to work out if you can get round the whole thing, or if not, which half to tackle. There are lots of delightful paths and open spaces in the newer housing estates.
There is very little in the way of soft ground paths.
Timing and Fees
Starts from 18:00 to 18:30. You should however be able to start a little earlier if you can get there earlier; we expect to be there with maps soon after 17:30 or thereabouts. If you think you will be unable to arrive and start by 18:30 please email to let us know that you will be coming later.
To guarantee a map, you will need to pre-enter via Fabian4: entries are open, and will stay open until midnight on Tuesday 6th October. A few extra maps will be available for entry on the day, but don't rely on this, and ideally bring cash, although we do now have an available card reader.
Entry fees: £5 seniors, plus £1 for unaffiliated (to British Orienteering) runners, £2 juniors (no added fee for unaffiliated juniors). Competitors aged under-16 must be accompanied, The fee covers a map printed on waterproof paper, event levies (for British Orienteering and MapRun), and the organiser/planner's expenses!
The course
This is a 60 minute score event using the MapRun app.
The Start and Finish are adjacent to parking.
-
Checkpoints 1-10 are worth 10 points.
-
Checkpoints 11-20 are worth 20 points.
-
Checkpoints 21-30 are worth 30 points.
Score as many points as you can in 60 minutes. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.
You'll be issued with a waterproof map, A4, scale 1:10,000, before you start.
Please make sure you’ve installed MapRun before the event. If installing MapRun for the first time, select the MapRun app from your app store, and not MapRunF or MapRun6. MapRun, which is in practise Maprun v7, is now the standard app. If you haven’t used MapRun before, don’t worry – it’s easy to use, and we have full details on getting started.
You should download the course to your phone ideally before coming to the event, as sometimes there is little or no phone signal once there.
Links to enable download will appear here when the course is published, typically a week or two before race day.
You can download the course by scanning this QR code

or by tapping this link on your MapRun phone, or by using one of the various options in the App to find events.
MapRunG (Garmin) and MapRunA (Apple) users: you do not need the event PIN number to download the course to your watch. This means you can download the course before your arrive at the event, in case there is no phone signal there.
For MapRunG users, if you have been having trouble uploading a result to your phone, you should read the message file at http://maprun.308.s1.nabble.com/MapRunG-Issues-quot-Get-Track-from-Garmin-quot-Jan-2026-td2178.html in the MapRun Forum. It explains some of the issues behind this ongoing problem, and potential workarounds.
Safety
The whole area is either residential or business/industrial, and built up, so the utmost care is needed when crossing all roads, and when turning corners or emerging from paths and alleyways. In particular, unless you are very familiar with the area, you'd be wise to avoid trying to make your way through the plethora of roundabouts next to Tesco, and head out North towards Ermin Street/Hucclecote Road. You can then choose whether to go clockwise or anti on your run.
A headtorch is advised for late arrivals, although there is very little unlit terrain.
Under 16s must be accompanied.
A first aid kit will be available at registration.
A Risk Assessment has been completed and will be available at Registration if anyone wishes to review it.
Orienteering is an adventure sport, and you are responsible for your own safety.
