09/11/2022 – MapRun – Tewkesbury

For our first winter MapRun of 2022-23, we return to Tewkesbury. Note it's a Wednesday event.

This time the medieval town centre will take centre stage, and the event will have some twists:

  • It'll take place on the more detailed 1:5000 orienteering map: things will be closer together than normal.
  • There'll be more checkpoints! 45 rather than the usual 30.
  • All checkpoints will be worth the same amount.

Even with the extra checkpoints, we think a perfect score should still be in reach for the fastest runners!

As with all our MapRuns it's open to everyone, whether you're a seasoned orienteer or it's the first time you've given it a go.

Directions and Parking

Parking and assembly are at Oldbury Road Car Park, GL20 5LR.  It's free after 1730.

The Area

  • The centre of Tewkesbury and close surroundings

  • Most of the area is paved, but there are a couple of checkpoints only accessible via footpaths, and optional routes through playing fields, which may get muddy.

It is very important that you pay attention to traffic, and dress wearing light coloured or reflective clothing to be visible. Some areas are unlit – you will need to take a torch.

Timing and Fees

Starts from 1830 to 1900.

You will need to pre-enter via Fabian4: this is open until midnight on Tue 8 November.

Entry fees: £5 seniors, £2 juniors. Competitors aged under-16 must be accompanied.

The course

It’s a one hour score event using the MapRun app.

  • For this event, all checkpoints are worth 10 points.

Score as many points as you can within an hour. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.

Please make sure you’ve installed MapRun6 before the event. If you haven’t used MapRun before, don’t worry – it’s easy to use, and we have full details on getting started.

MapRunG (Garmin watch) users: if you have MapRun6, you do not need the event PIN number to download the course to your watch. This means you can download the course before your arrive at the event, in case there is no phone signal there.

Safety

  • The course is located in an urban environment necessitating many road crossings, so under 16s must be accompanied.
  • Some paths get close to the river, so take care near the edge.
  • Many roads are unlit so is imperative that competitors wear visible clothing.

Although all legal Covid restrictions have ceased, you should NOT attend if you are Covid positive, or suspect you are.
