Scottish 6 Days Training

Scottish 6 Days Training

In the absence of an official training programme, and as we have some spare days between events, we have created an informal set of training courses based on the Oban 2011 training maps.

There are three training areas, with directions to each in the links below

Courses and Maps

There is a variety of courses available at each location. Most are linear courses, mainly TD5, so not for novices, but there is also a maprun scatter course set up at each venue. This is an all controls course, for which you need to punch at least 8 controls to get a successful run; you can of course do as many as you like, but will see a mispunch in the results if you punch fewer than 8 controls (including the mandatory crossing points at Inverawe).

All of this is based on 2011 maps, and the app and paper maps are simply scanned images of a map used at that time. They are reasonably clear, but with the exception of the Kerrera map, which shows the Blue course, they do not show any particular course – they are in effect All controls maps, but with some hand written lines and things on them.

I think that North Lines on the Kerrera and Inverawe maps should point to magnetic North, even if not vertically up the map; those maps are prints georeferenced in Google Earth, and so aligned with the current real world. The Sutherlands Grove map is a different matter; it is a simple print of the scanned image of the paper map, not georeferenced to the real world. The latter was significantly ‘skewed’ on an A4 page. As a result, the North lines at Sutherlands Grove are not correctly aligned with Magnetic North, and you need to use a compass with great care in that area.

Scroll down to the table below to see a list of courses, which you will find in UK/Gloucestershire/Training/S6Days.

MapRun Notes

You should have Maprun6 installed on your phone; if you haven’t, delete Maprun and MaprunF and install MapRun6 from your play store.

All courses have a 25m punch tolerance, to allow for inaccuracies in map registration etc, and runner location and track are enabled but switched off. We recommend that for these untested courses you switch on runner location and track. You don’t have to look at the phone, if you want to train properly, but if you are unable to get a beep when you think you are in the right place, then have a look to see what the phone thinks. It will be helpful if you can make a note of any problems you have with control placement, as we may offer these courses to EckO to add to their Maprun library, if they work OK. You need to go to Options and setting and switch these features on before you tap Go to Start.

Kerrera Ferry Details and Route to Start

From the ferry terminal, island side, its just under 2km walk to the start/finish. From the ferry follow the track round to the left, then take the right fork to pass between the farm on the right and the house on the left. Keep going past Ballinore farm shop, and about 200m or so after it, where the main track (I think) bears right, go straight on, on a smaller track. Follow that until you cross a fairly prominent stream, and the start/finish is just round the next corner, at a vague path junction. See the map here.

If you have a Kerrera course loaded, and you tap go to start when you leave the ferry, you can trace the route on the MapRun map – off the event map but using Open street map background. You’ll need to zoom right or out to see where you are….MapRun will display a red track until you punch the Start.

Ferry details: £3.30 return or thereabouts, turn up and go, though there may be limits on foot passenger numbers. For times, see: https://www.calmac.co.uk/summer-timetable/gallanach-kerrera – basically every 30 minutes until 6 pm

You need a face mask on the ferry.
