30/11/2022 – MapRun – Leckhampton

For our second winter MapRun of 2022-23, we explore the SE Cheltenham suburbs such as Leckhampton and Charlton Kings.

  • Note that it's another Wednesday event.
  • After the twists of Tewkesbury we return to our usual format, with a 1:10000 Street-O map and 30 checkpoints to try to collect in the hour.

As with all our MapRuns it's open to everyone, whether you're a seasoned orienteer or it's the first time you've given it a go.

Directions and Parking

Parking and assembly are at Bath Terrace Car Park, GL50 2BA.  It's free after 1800.

The Area

  • The event covers the suburbs on the SE side of Cheltenham, such as Leckhampton and Charlton Kings.

  • Most of the area is paved, but there are a few possible routes via unpaved footpaths that might be muddy.

It is very important that you pay attention to traffic, and dress wearing light coloured or reflective clothing to be visible. Some areas are unlit – you will need to take a torch.

Timing and Fees

Starts from 1830 to 1900.

To guarantee a map, you'll need to pre-enter via Fabian4: this is open until midnight on Tue 29 November (ie the night before the event).

Entry fees: £5 seniors, £2 juniors. Competitors aged under-16 must be accompanied.

The course

It’s a one hour score event using the MapRun app.  It's back to our standard scoring system for this event:

  • Checkpoints 1-10 are worth 10 points.
  • Checkpoints 11-20 are worth 20 points.
  • Checkpoints 21-30 are worth 30 points.

Score as many points as you can within an hour. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.

Please make sure you’ve installed MapRun6 before the event. If you haven’t used MapRun before, don’t worry – it’s easy to use, and we have full details on getting started.

MapRunG (Garmin watch) users: if you have MapRun6, you do not need the event PIN number to download the course to your watch. This means you can download the course before your arrive at the event, in case there is no phone signal there.

Safety

  • The course is located in an urban environment necessitating many road crossings, so under 16s must be accompanied.
  • Many roads are unlit so is imperative that competitors wear visible clothing.

Although all legal Covid restrictions have ceased, you should NOT attend if you are Covid positive, or suspect you are.
