19/12/2022 – MapRun – Pittville Christmas Special

Join us for our Christmas MapRun event in Pittville. Alongside the Christmas lights there'll be mulled wine from planner Greg Best, and Christmas baked goods such as mince pies from NGOC's star baker Caroline Craig!

Note that it's a Monday event. As with all our MapRuns it's open to everyone, whether you're a seasoned orienteer or it's the first time you've given it a go.

Entries are open now on Fabian4, and close at midnight on Sunday 18 December. Enter Online

Directions and Parking

We'll be starting from the driveway of the planner's house at 38 Albert Road, Cheltenham GL52 2QX. Toilet available! The house will be very well lit, so should be obvious and there will be a larger orienteering banner attached to the railings.

There is lots of free parking (for up to 4 hours) across the road and in the surrounding streets. There are always plenty of spaces in the evening.

The Area

  • The event covers the suburbs on the North side of Cheltenham

  • The course includes a number of parks and open spaces, where the grass may be wet and slippy in December. Although this can largely be avoided, for optimum routes you are likely to need to cross the grass in places. Parkland paths are mostly paved, but may also be slippy in places.

It is very important that you pay attention to traffic, and dress wearing light coloured or reflective clothing to be visible. Some areas are unlit – you will need to take a torch.

Timing and Fees

Starts from 1830 to 1900.

To guarantee a map, you'll need to pre-enter via Fabian4: this is open until midnight on Sun 18 December (ie the night before the event). Enter Online

Entry fees: £5 seniors, £2 juniors. Competitors aged under-16 must be accompanied.

The course

It’s a one hour score event using the MapRun app.  It's our standard scoring system for this event:

  • Checkpoints 1-10 are worth 10 points.
  • Checkpoints 11-20 are worth 20 points.
  • Checkpoints 21-30 are worth 30 points.

Score as many points as you can within an hour. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.

Please make sure you’ve installed MapRun6 before the event. If you haven’t used MapRun before, don’t worry – it’s easy to use, and we have full details on getting started.

MapRunG (Garmin watch) users: if you have MapRun6, you do not need the event PIN number to download the course to your watch. This means you can download the course before your arrive at the event, in case there is no phone signal there.

Safety

  • The course is located in an urban environment necessitating many road crossings, so under 16s must be accompanied.
  • Many roads are unlit so is imperative that competitors wear visible clothing.

Although all legal Covid restrictions have ceased, you should NOT attend if you are Covid positive, or suspect you are.
