23/05/2024 - Tutshill and Woodcroft 2024

Welcome to the villages of Tutshill and Woodcroft, surrounding fields and Offas Dyke. This will be our first venture into the rural zone North of Woodcroft. Most of the area and routes are footpaths, but there is a fairly significant road running through the area, and the main A48 from Chepstow towards Lydney and Gloucester may be crossed, but may not be run along at any point.

NOTE to all MAPRUNNERS. You must be using MapRun v7 to run this course. It is just called MapRun. If you have MapRun6 or MapRunF please remove them and install just plain Maprun.

Entries are open now and will close at midnight on Wednesday 22nd May. Enter Online

The Area

The area is primarily off road so shoes with some grip would be ideal unless the weather has been dry for a few weeks prior to the event (unlikely at the moment but summer must arrive soon). Some of the area is very hilly. Apart from the Coleford Road itself other roads are minor with usually little traffic. However please be mindful of other road and footpath users at all times. Local residents (with or without dogs) frequently use the footpaths.

Livestock may be present in some fields, please treat it with caution and respect.

Please keep to mapped paths and do not cut across farmers’ fields or other open areas. These are not open access land.

There are no toilets nearby but there is a large Tesco supermarket 1 mile away so please use their facilities.

The Rising Sun in Woodcroft is the nearest pub (1 mile away) and is a lovely community-owned pub. You’d be welcome there after your run. https://www.therisingsunwoodcroft.co.uk/

Timing and Fees

Starts from 18:15 to 18:45. If you think you'll struggle to make that start window, email the organiser to let him know, and we can extend starts a bit.

To guarantee a map, you will need to pre-enter via Fabian4: entries are now open, and will stay open until midnight on Wednesday 22nd May. A few extra maps will be available for entry on the day, but don't rely on this, and ideally bring cash, although we do now have an available card reader.

Entry fees: £5 seniors, £2 juniors. Competitors aged under-16 must be accompanied. The fee covers third party liability insurance, a map printed on waterproof paper, and post-run cake!

The course

It’s a one hour score event using the MapRun app:

The Start is about 100m from the car park, and the Finish is about 30m from the start, up a cul de sac to avoid premature finishes.

  • Checkpoints 1-10 are worth 10 points.

  • Checkpoints 11-20 are worth 20 points.

  • Checkpoints 21-30 are worth 30 points.

Score as many points as you can within an hour. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.

You'll be issued with a waterproof map, A4, scale 1:10,000, before you start.

Please make sure you’ve installed MapRun before the event. If installing MapRun for the first time, select the MapRun app from your app store, and not MapRunF or MapRun6. MapRun, which is in practise Maprun v7, is now the standard app. If you haven’t used MapRun before, don’t worry – it’s easy to use, and we have full details on getting started.

You should download the course to your phone ideally before coming to the event, as sometimes there is little or no phone signal once there.

Links to enable download will appear here when the course is published, a week or two before the day.

You can download the course by scanning this QR code

or by tapping this link on your MapRun phone, or by using the Select Event button in MapRun and navigating to the UK/Gloucestershire/Current Series folder.

MapRunG (Garmin watch) users: if you have MapRun6 or later, you do not need the event PIN number to download the course to your watch. This means you can download the course before your arrive at the event, in case there is no phone signal there.

Safety

Due to the fact the area includes roads juniors under 16s must be accompanied for insurance reasons.

Wintours Leap is a significant crag in the area (it is just to the left of the date in the Post Header!). Woodcroft Quarry is also included within the area. Both have 100m high cliffs. The cliffs have been marked on the map with a purple X but without obstructing other useful detail. The cliffs are OOB. Do not climb any cliffs, they are not a short-cut. Do not venture into Woodcroft Quarry. Most of the cliffs are used by climbers and are technically extremely difficult. https://www.thebmc.co.uk/modules/rad/view.aspx?id=744

Some route choices may involve crossing a 100m long boulder field. This should be stable (it has been in situ for years) but in wet weather the individual boulders can be very slippery and unless you’re a mountain goat I would exercise caution in dry weather as well.

A local dairy farmer may have placed a moveable electric line across a footpath in the northern area of the map. If you come across it please pass it sensibly.

Please be mindful of other road users. The Coleford Road can take lorries and heavy traffic vehicles although unlikely in the evenings. Cyclists are common. Pavements are not so common.

Orienteering is an adventure sport. All runners take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety.

In case of emergency a defibrillator is located in the car park by the finish.

Although all legal Covid restrictions have ceased, you should NOT attend if you are Covid positive, or suspect you are.
