Thursday 17/09/2026 - The Stanleys 2026

We stay East of the Severn for the final race in this third quarter series, visiting the twin villages of King's Stanley and Leonard Stanley for the first time. It's a delightful area, two villages with plenty of route choices, surrounded by mainly arable but some dairy farming, and with a good path network.

Important: Please also note that as from 1 January 2026 Non-members of British Orienteering are not insured under British Orienteering’s public liability policy. By entering this event, you acknowledge that you are participating at your own risk.

Entries are now open and will close at midnight on Wednesday 16th September . Enter Online

Directions and Parking

Parking and registration are in the small public car park opposite the Village Inn in the centre of King's Stanley. There aren't many spaces, and some seem to be permanently occupied by vans, so do try and share transport if you can. At worst we will need to overflow discretely into the Village Hall car park the other side of the Village inn. There are lots of activities going on there on race day, so it's likely to be full, and my request to park there was refused, but hopefully there will be the odd spare space.

The Area

A nice balance of quiet residential village roads surrounded by a network of good footpaths, with generally very good signage. Most of the surrounding farmland is arable or pasture, and most crops have been harvested, but there is some dairy farming, and you may encounter cattle in one or two places. They should be no problem to pass, though if close to the footpaths they should be allowed space. If you are particularly concerned about running through fields with cattle, let me know when you register and I can tell you where they were when I checked the course two weeks before the race.

Most paths are well used, with little sharp/stinging undergrowth, and normal trail shoes should be fine unless we have severe rain before race day.

Timing and Fees

Starts from 18:00 to 18:30. You should however be able to start a little earlier if you can get there earlier; we expect to be there with maps soon after 17:30 or thereabouts. If you think you will be unable to arrive and start by 18:30 please email to let us know that you will be coming later.

To guarantee a map, you will need to pre-enter via Fabian4: entries are open, and will stay open until midnight on Wednesday 16th September. A few extra maps will be available for entry on the day, but don't rely on this, and ideally bring cash, although we do now have an available card reader.

Entry fees: £5 seniors, plus £1 for unaffiliated (to British Orienteering) runners, £2 juniors (no added fee for unaffiliated juniors). The course

This is a 60 minute score event using the MapRun app.

The Start and Finish are adjacent to parking.

  • Checkpoints 1-10 are worth 10 points.

  • Checkpoints 11-20 are worth 20 points.

  • Checkpoints 21-30 are worth 30 points.

Score as many points as you can in 60 minutes. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.

You'll be issued with a waterproof map, A4, scale 1:10,000, before you start.

Please make sure you’ve installed MapRun before the event. If installing MapRun for the first time, select the MapRun app from your app store, and not MapRunF or MapRun6. MapRun, which is in practise Maprun v7, is now the standard app. If you haven’t used MapRun before, don’t worry – it’s easy to use, and we have full details on getting started.

You should download the course to your phone ideally before coming to the event, as sometimes there is little or no phone signal once there.

Links to enable download will appear here when the course is published, typically a week or two before race day.

MapRunG (Garmin) and MapRunA (Apple) users: you do not need the event PIN number to download the course to your watch. This means you can download the course before your arrive at the event, in case there is no phone signal there.

For MapRunG users, if you have been having trouble uploading a result to your phone, you should read the message file at http://maprun.308.s1.nabble.com/MapRunG-Issues-quot-Get-Track-from-Garmin-quot-Jan-2026-td2178.html in the MapRun Forum. It explains some of the issues behind this ongoing problem, and potential workarounds.

Safety

Some main roads through the villages will be busy, so special care is needed when crossing these.

Under 16s must be accompanied.

A first aid kit will be available at registration.

A Risk Assessment has been completed and will be available at Registration if anyone wishes to review it.

Orienteering is an adventure sport, and you are responsible for your own safety.
