21/12/2023 - Cheltenham 2023

The final event of the 2023 NGOC Maprun League is a Christmassy trip to Cheltenham.

It's pretty much the same start location as our Christmas 2019 event. Four years ago we had a lot of runners scoring the maximum 600: the controls this year will be a bit more spread out so getting them all will be a trickier prospect, but high scores should be achievable.

Entries are open at Fabian4.co.uk; you have until midnight on Wednesday 20 December to enter. Enter Online

Officials

Organiser: Tom Cochrane

Directions and Parking

Assembly will be near the Neptune Fountain in Cheltenham Town Centre, GL50 1PJ.  The start/finish is just along from this, in front of the entrance to the Municipal Buildings (opposite the war memorial).

Parking:

Click on the running man on the map below, and then the Direction icon icon to get directions to the course.

The Area

Central Cheltenham and its near surroundings: an urban area, mostly well-lit, although you'll need a headtorch as a few paths are unlit.  There may be pedestrians (in Christmas cheer) and some road traffic.

Timing and Fees

Starts from 1830 to 1900.

To guarantee a map, you will need to pre-enter via Fabian4: this is open until midnight on Wednesday 20 December. A few extra maps will be available for entry on the day, but don't rely on this, and bring cash!

Entry fees: £5 seniors, £2 juniors. Competitors aged under-16 must be accompanied. The fee covers third party liability insurance, a map printed on waterproof paper, and post-run cake!

The course

It’s a one hour score event using the MapRun app:

  • Checkpoints 1-10 are worth 10 points.

  • Checkpoints 11-20 are worth 20 points.

  • Checkpoints 21-30 are worth 30 points.

Score as many points as you can within an hour. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.

You'll be issued with a waterproof map, A4, scale 1:10,000, before you start.

Please make sure you’ve installed MapRun before the event. If installing MapRun for the first time, select the MapRun app from yor app store, and not MapRunF or MapRun6. MapRun, which is in practise Maprun v7, is now the standard app. If you haven’t used MapRun before, don’t worry – it’s easy to use, and we have full details on getting started.

You should download the course to your phone ideally before coming to the event, as sometimes there is little or no phone signal once there.

You can download the course by scanning this QR code

or by tapping this link on your MapRun phone, or by using the Select Event button in MapRun and navigating to the UK/Gloucestershire/Current Series folder.

MapRunG (Garmin watch) users: if you have MapRun6 or later, you do not need the event PIN number to download the course to your watch. This means you can download the course before your arrive at the event, in case there is no phone signal there.

Safety

  • The course is mainly urban, but with a few footpath options through parks etc. There are no major roads in the event area, but expect the roads to be moderately busy. You must also take care running out of alleyways or around corners, and be very aware of other pedestrians.
  • A head torch is mandatory, and you should wear bright or reflective clothing.
  • Under 16s must be accompanied.
  • A First Aid kit will be available at registration
