Welcome to the third event in the NGOC MapRun series of 2023. For this event, we head to the large and expanding village of Bishop’s Cleeve. Rob Finch will be planning his first event for NGOC. In a twist from the usual rules, all controls have the same points value. Andy Creber won the last event in Abbeydale, but who will take on Bishop’s Cleeve and be on top this time? If this is your first MapRun event, we look forward to seeing you and there will be someone around on the evening to talk through how it works.

Directions and Parking

Parking is in the public car park just off the high street of Bishop’s Cleeve, GL52 8RL.

  • Parking is free in the eastern end of the car park by the library.
  • The larger western end is a Tesco car park and is available for overflow car park. The Tesco car park is free for 2 hours for Tesco customers.

The Area

Bishop’s Cleeve is a large village with a number of different areas. There are different style of housing from a number of eras. A couple of the controls are by some of the very newest houses! The focus of the course is on a cluster of controls in an intricate area with complicated streets and paths where micro route choice and keeping in touch with the map will be key. Then to get bigger scores, you’ll have to use the running speed to get around the village. 

The majority of the course is the usual mix of residential roads, cut through paths and some green spaces. The roads are typically 30mph with one faster 40mph road on the western edge to take care of when crossing. As usual, the traffic and locals won’t be expecting to see you out orienteering so look after yourself!

Timing and Fees

Starts from 1830 to 1900.

To guarantee a map, you will need to pre-enter via Fabian4: this is open until midnight on Tuesday 21 February. A few extra maps will be available for entry on the day, but don't rely on this!


Enter Online

Entry fees: £5 seniors, £2 juniors. Competitors aged under-16 must be accompanied. The fee covers third party liability insurance, a map printed on waterproof paper, and post-run cake!

We may or may not be able to take card payments, so bring cash if planning to enter on the day.

The course

In a change from our regular scoring system, all checkpoints are worth 20 points.

Score as many points as you can within one hour. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.

You'll be issued with a waterproof map, A4, scale 1:10,000, before you start.

Please make sure you’ve installed MapRun or MapRun6 before the event. If you haven’t used MapRun before, don’t worry – it’s easy to use, and we have full details on getting started. Note that MapRun is now the current version(V7), although MapRun6 still works fine. We'd like to encourage people to move to MapRun from MapRun6, which you can do by simply downloading just MapRun, not MapRun6, from your store. The two versions co-exist quite happily on phones. Eventually the 6 version will disappear, and we return to just MapRun, as was the case when it first appeared about 5 years ago now.

You should download the course to your phone ideally before coming to the event, as sometimes there is little or no phone signal once there. You can use this QR code to download it, you can click this link on your MapRun phone, or simply open the App, Select Event, and navigate to UK/Gloucestershire/Current Series to download it from there.

MapRunG (Garmin watch) users: if you have MapRun6 or later, you do not need the event PIN number to download the course to your watch. This means you can download the course before your arrive at the event, in case there is no phone signal there.

Safety

  • Reflective clothing and a headtorch are essential.
  • Majority of the course is on residential roads (30mph speed limit) with one 40mph crossing the road on the western side of the map.
  • Under 16s must be accompanied.
  • A First Aid kit will be available at registration
 

Although all legal Covid restrictions have ceased, you should NOT attend if you are Covid positive, or suspect you are.
