29/08/2022 - SEOUL Urban - Nailsworth

On Bank Holiday Monday we have Urban Orienteering in a brand new venue: the Cotswold town of Nailsworth, which nestles scenically in the Stroud Valleys.  We'll go from modern housing estates with an intricate network of footpaths, to a wealth of longer route options between villages across the hills.

We are grateful to Forest Green Rovers Football Club for permission to use their ground for parking and assembly.

Enter Online Enter on Fabian4.co.uk by midnight on Friday 26th August, or possibly earlier if parking space becomes an issue.
Try not to leave it to the last minute to enter.

Late News: The NGOC cafe may not be present, for logistic reasons, so don't rely on it being there. Bring your own drinks etc, or visit one of the many places in town.

The Area

The event will cover the town of Nailsworth, including the suburb of Forest Green and the village of Shortwood, located across the valley.  Across some scenic valleys there are a mixture of old cottages and new housing estates: these are linked by footpaths and alleyways that are often steep!

The junior course will remain in the housing estate of Forest Green.  Adult courses will venture further afield, with courses 1, 2 and 3 reaching the town centre.

The Map

ISSprOM 2019 at 1:4000, newly mapped in 2022 by Tom Cochrane.  Shorter courses will have A4 maps, longer courses A3 (the edges of the paper may not be oriented to North).

Start and Finish

The Start will be in Miles Marling field, about 400m walk from the football ground.  Start times will not be assigned - join the queue any time.  Note that juniors will need to be accompanied to the start.

The Finish will be adjacent to the assembly area.

Format

This is an Urban event with five courses of varying lengths.  Unaccompanied juniors are only allowed on course 5 (which is designed to avoid unmarshalled crossings of substantial roads).  Adults are free to pick any length of course; if you'd like to score points toward SEOUL (the Southern England Orienteering Urban League), you'll need to enter the category associated with your age range.

Course SEOUL classes length(Km) Climb(m) Controls
1 MO MV WO 8.4km 330m 17
2 MSV WV 7.4km 250m 18
3 MUV WSV 6.1km 240m 14
4 MHV WUV WHV 4.2km 130m 11
5 MJ WJ 3.5km 150m 15

All courses are subject to final controlling.

Course distances and climb are approximate optimal route distances, not straight line.

Regrettably there is no string course, due to a lack of a suitable area close to assembly.

We will use SI Timing, in contact and touch free modes. All runners must however punch the Start and Finish controls.

Entry on the day is available only while maps last, but note the premium price to discourage this. We should by then be able to accept credit/debit card payments, but this is not guaranteed so bring cash just in case.

A helper discount is available for those offering to help on the day. These events don't happen without volunteers willing to help out on the day, so if you are able to do so, before signing up to enter, email NGOC_Volunteers@outlook.com to let him know you can help, and ask for the helper discount code that you can apply when entering. You don't have to be an NGOC member to help, but you do need to be a BO member to be covered insurance wise.

Refunds

As the Government has removed all restrictions on events and activities, COVID related refunds are no longer available. The standard Fabian4 terms and conditions offer an automatic refund up to 2 months before the event date, and we do not normally vary this specification. That means that in most cases no refunds are possible, as we do not publish details until less than 2 months before the date of the event.

However, for all except large events we hold entries open until only a day or so before the event, so you can delay entry if unsure whether you can run, until very close to event day.

Dogs

Dogs are permitted under control at all times. Please ensure that you clean up and bin all mess.

Facilities

The NGOC cafe may be present at Assembly, but may not, depending on logistics for the day. Don't rely on it being there.

Toilets will be available in the football club.

Safety

  • Being in an urban area there will be plenty of cars and pedestrians: take appropriate care, and give way.
  • Unaccompanied juniors will only be allowed on Course 5: this has a marshalled road crossing with a timed-out section.  There may be cars on the remainder of course 5, but these are access/parking roads so traffic should be slow-moving.
  • Given the time of year there may be nettles/brambles encroaching some of the narrower paths, but the likely routes are not excessively overgrown, and shorts should be fine.
