BOKArmy 2024 Spring Manoeuvres

As you'll all be aware, we will be conducting our Spring Manoeuvres, cunningly planned by Alan Richards, on two separate days this year, working 'under cover' - just think, SAS - seldom seen, a complete mystery to most people, fleeting glimpses of shadowy people up to no good in the woods - that kind of thing....

You have all been given your tasks. You just turn up on the appointed day, looking and acting casual, not too much showy O-wear, and have a great time rushing around Great Barnets Wood, before rations are served at the Millers Arms, Mathern.

Directions

Parking is in the main car park at Great Barnets Wood. it is widely used by the public - mainly dog walkers - so park considerately.

Note that the turn into the car park is not signed, but comes up as you appraoch the end of the woodland stretch of road, travelling from Chesptow.

Click on the parking symbol on the map below, and then the Direction icon icon to get directions to the course.

Courses, Timings etc

There are two linear courses:

  • Boldly, 4.4km, 120m climb, 18 controls
  • Gently, 3km, 80m climb, 10 controls
Going Boldly involves crossing the main road, out and back. You must use the crossings marked on the map.

The map is A4, scale 1:7,500, printed on waterproof paper, and with punch boxes on the bottom of the map. Controls will be marked with the normal flags, but with pin punches in place of SI kit. However, so that we get accurate run times, please bring a dibber with you; you will punch start and finish controls only, and just put it in a pocket or somewhere in between.

Start and Finish are adjacent to parking. Starts will be from 10:30 to 11:00, with lunch ordered for 13:00

Lunch

Lunch is at the Millers Arms, Mathern, NP16 6JD, which is about a 10 minute drive from Great Barnets Wood. What 3 words: ///knowledge.fattening.inflation

Registration

As is customary, you need to register for the day, in this case to confirm that you are coming on the designated day, and to order lunch. There are two registration forms, one for each event day, and you have all been allocated to one of the two event days - Wednesday 3rd April and Thursday 11th April. In case you have forgotten which, you can see the allocations HERE. In case it's not blindingly obvious, your day is highlighted in yellow! If you can no longer make your designated day, but could maybe make the other, the registration form provides a place for you to say so, and we will try and fit you in. You must, however, register using the form for the day you are assigned to. We are trying to stick to our policy of no more than 20 runners at each day, so you may or may not get a slot for the other day.

The Millers has an extensive menu, with 2- or 3-course deals priced therein, and lots of light bite type options. You can see the menu HERE. Please make sure you select all relevant options, so if having fish and chips, or curry, for example, make sure you specify what sort of peas, or how much rice/chips etc.

So, study the menu, then select the relevant form for your designated day from the two options below, and register your choice of course and lunch. Registrations will close on the Thursday night before your designated day, so Thursday 28 March for the 3 April session, and Thursday 4 April for the 11 April session.

Register for the 3rd April HERE by midnight on Thursday 28 March

Register for the 11th April HERE by midnight on Thursday 4 April

There is no entry fee on this occasion; we will pay for map printing from the current BOKArmy surplus funds.

The small print

This is NOT a formal BO registered event. It is a gathering of friends for a bit of exercise in the woods. You enter and run at entirely your own risk.

As mentioned above the area is popular with dog walkers. Be nice to them.
