Thursday 16/07/2026 - Woolaston 2026
Our late Summer programme kicks off with a race around Woolaston and nearby Clanna Ponds, a great mix of village, woodland, and open farm land. The farmland is a mix of pasture and arable, the latter, mainly to the South West of the village, planted with a maize crop which by race day will be at head height at least! The footpaths - all public rights of way - are, however, kept fairly clear, or at least passable, by the local dog walkers.
We are most grateful to Kate and Katie at the Rising Sun for allowing us to base ourselves there; please support the pub. As well as drinks there should be baskets of chips on offer during the evening. The pub is popular, and space is limited, so please call and book if you wish to have a proper meal after your run - 01594 529282.
Important: Please also note that as from 1 January 2026 Non-members of British Orienteering are not insured under British Orienteering’s public liability policy. By entering this event, you acknowledge that you are participating at your own risk.
Entries are now open and will close at midnight on Wednesday 15th July .

Directions and Parking
Parking is at The Rising Sun, Woolaston Common(///cage.ranted.producing) or alongside the road either side of the pub. Please do not fill up the car park if arriving early; leave spaces for other pub customers. There is quite a bit of parking on the road side beyond and before the pub, but park considerately so as not to obstruct passing traffic, and do not park directly opposite the gate of the house next door to the pub.
Grid Reference: SO590009
The nearest postcode is GL15 6NU.
Registration is in the pub garden next to the car park, or if wet, in the smokers' shelter to the right of the front door of the pub.
The Area
This is a course with three fairly distinct terrains - the village itself, the surrounding farmland, crossed by many public footpaths, and the woodland around Clanna Ponds, which was formerly part of a large estate but is now owned by Forestry England and consists of a single large trout lake with various more or less dry streams and channels in the surrounding woods. As mentioned above, the farmland to the South West of the village is mainly down to maize, but with some hay crops, many of which will have been cut by race day. To the North and East the fields are largely pasture, and may contain sheep, with cattle less likely. As is generally the case with maps based on Open Street Map, the map shows a mix of orange coloured open land (here almost all farmland except within the village), or white private or unmapped land. The mapped footpaths are all public or permissive footpaths; please keep to the paths and do not be tempted to run directly across any fields. Some paths which either cross fenced sheep pasture, or are impenetrable, are marked as Out of Bounds, with purple crosses.
Timing and Fees
Starts from 18:00 to 18:30. You should however be able to start a little earlier if you can get there earlier; we expect to be there with maps soon after 17:30 or thereabouts. If you think you will be unable to arrive and start by 18:30 please email to let us know that you will be coming later.
To guarantee a map, you will need to pre-enter via Fabian4: entries are open, and will stay open until midnight on Wednesday 15th July. A few extra maps will be available for entry on the day, but don't rely on this, and ideally bring cash, although we do now have an available card reader.
Entry fees: £5 seniors, plus £1 for unaffiliated (to British Orienteering) runners, £2 juniors (no added fee for unaffiliated juniors). Competitors aged under-16 must be accompanied, The fee covers a map printed on waterproof paper, event levies (for British Orienteering and MapRun), and the organiser/planner's expenses!
The course
This is a 60 minute score event using the MapRun app.
The Start and Finish are adjacent to parking.
-
Checkpoints 1-10 are worth 10 points.
-
Checkpoints 11-20 are worth 20 points.
-
Checkpoints 21-30 are worth 30 points.
Score as many points as you can in 60 minutes. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.
You'll be issued with a waterproof map, A4, scale 1:10,000, before you start.
Please make sure you’ve installed MapRun before the event. If installing MapRun for the first time, select the MapRun app from your app store, and not MapRunF or MapRun6. MapRun, which is in practise Maprun v7, is now the standard app. If you haven’t used MapRun before, don’t worry – it’s easy to use, and we have full details on getting started.
You should download the course to your phone ideally before coming to the event, as sometimes there is little or no phone signal once there.
Links to enable download will appear here when the course is published, typically a week or two before race day.
MapRunG (Garmin) and MapRunA (Apple) users: you do not need the event PIN number to download the course to your watch. This means you can download the course before your arrive at the event, in case there is no phone signal there.
Safety
The competition area includes the use of minor roads and other private drives and tracks with vehicle access. Many of the roads are narrow with some poor visibility. Extreme caution is needed at junctions and where paths exit onto roads.
Under 16s must be accompanied.
A first aid kit will be available at registration.
A Risk Assessment has been completed and will be available at Registration if anyone wishes to review it.
At this time of year undergrowth is rampant on some of the paths; deer ticks are prevalent, ad you should check yourselves carefully after your run for any such unwelcome passengers!
Orienteering is an adventure sport, and you are responsible for your own safety.
