Thursday 04/06/2026 - St Briavels 2026
Starting in the centre of St Briavels village beside the medieval castle the map extends beyond the village across a dense network of minor roads, tracks and footpaths through the fields and woods of the St Briavels Common. Registration will be at The George Inn and the pub will be pleased to offer hospitality – please give them your support!
Important: Please also note that as from 1 January 2026 Non-members of British Orienteering are not insured under British Orienteering’s public liability policy. By entering this event, you acknowledge that you are participating at your own risk.
Entries are now open and will close at midnight on Wednesday 3rd June .

Directions and Parking
St Briavels can be accessed from the B4228 between Coleford and Chepstow or on minor roads from the A48 at Aylburton, south of Lydney, and the A466 at Bigsweir Bridge or Redbrook. PLEASE NOTE: if travelling from Monmouth, the A466 will be closed for slope stabilisation work between Redbrook and Bigswier. Parking is roadside in St Briavels village. Parking places can be found around the castle, on East Street and on the High Street. There is likely to be plenty of space at the top of the High Street outside St Briavels Primary School (///lyricism.uptown.degree). Limited parking will be available in the small pub car park but space also needs to be reserved for other customers. Please note many properties in the village do not have off road parking, please try to avoid parking spots used by local residents. Park considerately to avoid blocking entrances, obscuring junctions or causing restrictions on narrow sections.
Registration is at the back of The George Inn (entrance through car park):

The Area
A mix of village, dispersed cottages on former common land, small fields and woods on the hill top and upper slopes of the Wye Valley. Routes can be chosen to avoid excessive climb.
Mapping of open access land (yellow) and private land (white) is not consistent and access for the maprun is limited to the linear network of footpaths, tracks and minor roads. The only exception is St Briavels playing field, off East Street, which is pretty obvious when you get there. Some footpaths pass through gardens and along private drives to properties. Please be respectful of private properties, their occupants and other footpath users. Please take care and avoid disturbing livestock in fields. You should keep to marked footpaths throughout your run, as accessibility is not well mapped in OpenStreetMap in this neighbourhood. Assume most terrain outside the woodland is not accessible. Fences and walls should not be crossed except where there are gates or stiles for public use. Footpaths known to have excessive seasonal undergrowth will be marked with ‘O’ on the map.
St Briavels Castle moat, which does have public access, is marked on the map as out of bounds. Do not use the footpath in the moat that goes directly behind the pub. This footpath passes close to the finish (in the pub car park) and could end your run before you intended!
Timing and Fees
Starts from 18:00 to 18:30. You should however be able to start a little earlier if you can get there earlier; we expect to be there with maps soon after 17:30 or thereabouts. If you think you will be unable to arrive and start by 18:30 please email to let us know that you will be coming later.
To guarantee a map, you will need to pre-enter via Fabian4: entries are open, and will stay open until midnight on Wednesday 3rd June. A few extra maps will be available for entry on the day, but don't rely on this, and ideally bring cash, although we do now have an available card reader.
Entry fees: £5 seniors, plus £1 for unaffiliated (to British Orienteering) runners, £2 juniors (no added fee for unaffiliated juniors). Competitors aged under-16 must be accompanied, unless confining their routes to the forest areas or village outskirts. The fee covers a map printed on waterproof paper, post-run cake, and the organiser/planner's expenses!
The course
This is a 60 minute score event using the MapRun app.
The Start and Finish are adjacent to parking.
-
Checkpoints 1-10 are worth 10 points.
-
Checkpoints 11-20 are worth 20 points.
-
Checkpoints 21-30 are worth 30 points.
Score as many points as you can in 60 minutes. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.
You'll be issued with a waterproof map, A4, scale 1:10,000, before you start.
Please note the map scale is 1:12,500, which is a smaller scale than the usual 1:10,000 for mapruns. You should plan your route accordingly in order not to get penalty points.
Please make sure you’ve installed MapRun before the event. If installing MapRun for the first time, select the MapRun app from your app store, and not MapRunF or MapRun6. MapRun, which is in practise Maprun v7, is now the standard app. If you haven’t used MapRun before, don’t worry – it’s easy to use, and we have full details on getting started.
You should download the course to your phone ideally before coming to the event, as sometimes there is little or no phone signal once there.
Links to enable download will appear here when the course is published, typically a week or two before race day.
MapRunG (Garmin) and MapRunA (Apple) users: you do not need the event PIN number to download the course to your watch. This means you can download the course before your arrive at the event, in case there is no phone signal there.
Safety
The competition area includes the use of minor roads and other private drives and tracks with vehicle access. Many of the roads are narrow with poor visibility. Extreme caution is needed at junctions and where paths exit onto roads. There is a 30 mph speed limit on the B4228 and there are pavements either side of the road within the village. There isn’t a pedestrian crossing but the road may be crossed with care within the village. Outside the village the B4228 is out of bounds and should not be run along or crossed.
A section of footpath along the top of the Hudnalls Wood is closed for safety reasons following a landslide. It is marked as out of bounds and must not be used.
Under 16s must be accompanied.
A first aid kit will be available at registration.
Orienteering is an adventure sport, and you are responsible for your own safety.
