Saturday 06/09/2025 - 2025 - Chair's Challenge - Crickely Hill
The annual NGOC Chairman's Challenge is back! The Chair's Challenge is primarily a fun, social, event for club members and other friends of NGOC who compete regularly at our events. It takes place this year on Saturday 6th September, as an 'ultra sprint' which will hopefully give a new angle to this popular area. We are very grateful to the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and The National Trust for permission to hold our event on this area.
The challenge will take the format of an ultra-sprint. This will comprise three micro-courses of about 1 - 1.5km each. Map scale is 1:3,000, with no control codes or descriptions; competitors run to the dot in the middle of the control circle. Mis-punches receive a time penalty rather than disqualification and results are based on the cumulative time for all three courses plus time penalties.
We are holding the event later in the day than usual as our access is conditional upon us arriving after most other members of the public have left for the day, please avoid arriving much before 3:00pm.
A meal afterwards will be provided by a specially appointed catering team and, as for last year, is expected to include a bowl of chilli (in the style of Wilf’s Café, veg only, for food safety reasons), nibbles, tray bakes and a drink, subject to final numbers and availability. Lunch is optional, at a charge of £5, but free for under 12s. Please book your meal tickets through Fabian 4 alongside your entry so we can get an idea of numbers for catering. Feel free to bring your own picnic or drinks to supplement or instead of the provided lunch.
[01/09/25 update] Please note that touch free dibbing is disabled for this event due to the close proximity of many controls to one another, plus a scoring scheme that penalises controls 'punched' incorrectly. Therefore everyone must punch every control as well as the Start and Finish ones. If you have hired a touch free dibber you should reclaim the additional cost (over standard dibber hire) from Registration. Note also that there is only a veg chilli option, for food safety reasons. The mention of a beef option was incorrect.
Entries are open at Fabian 4, and will close at midnight on Wednesday 3th September.

Parking and Assembly are in the lower car park adjacent to the competition area. The event will not be signed, please find your way to Crickley Hill Country Park and follow the access road through to the café, toilets and car parking. Note that massive roadworks are ongoing at the Air Balloon roundabout and surrounding areas. Please use the lower car park. Parking incurs a flat fee for all visitors to the Country Park of £2 and should be paid at the end of your visit. The payment machine is located by the café; there may be another kiosk installed in the lower car park in the coming weeks. The Area
Very much an area of two halves - the western side is very runnable but steeply sloping short grass with scattered trees and small contour features; the Eastern half is flatter and a mix of open, semi-open and wooded areas. Full leg cover is recommended in case of nettles.
The Map
1:3,000, 5m contours, printed on waterproof paper.
There are multiple fence and hedge crossings which will be mandatory. Crossing elsewhere is not be permitted, and anyone reported as doing so will be disqualified.
There will be no control descriptions, and no control codes on the map. Competitors run to the dot in the middle of the control circle. Mis-punches receive a time penalty rather than disqualification.
Start and Finish
The Start is about 100m away from assembly. There will be punching starts with no start times will be allocated. Once you have finished your first course, downloaded and recovered (or at least caught your breath), please return to the start to complete you next course and so on until you have completed all three courses. Don’t forget to download between courses!
The finish will be close to download and assembly.
Courses
Everyone will run the same three short (approx 1.0 – 1.5km) courses, in any order. As mentioned above, there are no control descriptions, and no control codes on the map. Mispunches incur a time penalty rather than disqualification, and your result is the aggregate of all three run times plus any penalties picked up en route. Note that this event will not meet rule 19.4 of IOF standards for control separation, as controls will be as close as 10m from each other, very occasionally on similar features. Course leg lengths may be as short as 20m. Accurate navigation will be helpful!
In addition to the Challenge Course, there will be a Yellow course available for entry on the day.
We will use SI Timing, in contact mode only. All runners must punch all controls.

Entries are now open, and will close at midnight on Wednesday 3rd September. Please enter early if you can, to help with food planning.
Entry on the day is possible only while maps last, but note the premium price to discourage this. We should by then be able to accept credit/debit card payments, but this is not guaranteed so bring cash just in case.
A helper discount is available for those offering to help on the day. These events don't happen without volunteers willing to help out on the day, so if you are able to do so, before signing up to enter, email Ian Prowse, Volunteer Coordinator, to let us know if you can help, and ask for the helper discount code that you can apply when entering. You don't have to be a NGOC member to help, but you do need to be a BOF member to be covered insurance wise.
Refunds
The standard Fabian4 terms and conditions offer an automatic refund up to 2 months before the event date, and we do not normally vary this specification. That means that in most cases no refunds are possible, as we do not publish details until less than 2 months before the date of the event.
However, for all except large events we hold entries open until only a few days before the event, so you can delay entry if unsure whether you can run, until very close to event day.
Dogs
Dogs are permitted under control on courses and in the parking area.
Facilities
There is a Café on the upper level of the car parking which will be open until 4pm.
There are public toilets next to the Café which are expected to remain open for the duration of the event.
Safety
Competitors take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for terrain and weather.
The area is steep in places, so care and grippy shoes are required.
A risk assessment has been carried out and will be available to view at assembly.
A First Aid kit will be available at Assembly, together with qualified first aiders.
