The Summer Street Challenge is a series of 5 Thursday evening races around the towns and suburbs of Gloucestershire. It offers courses of about 8K and 5K running distance, as well as a one hour score course. If the area permits, there may also be a junior course of 1 – 2km, planned so as to avoid all roads.

The second street challenge of 2017 returns to the City centre in Gloucester, scene of last year’s urban league race, and Triple Gloucester 2015 Day 2.

Travel Directions and Parking

Parking is in the Go Outdoors car park, by kind permission of Go Outdoors management.

Go Outdoors is on the Inner Ring Road, diagonally across the Barton street crossroads from the GL1 leisure centre. Access to the car park is via a turning at the traffic lights 100m South of the main Barton Street crossroads. Study the map and directions carefully as it is an easy turning to miss, and tricky to get back around to if you do miss it.

Parking is free, but note that the car park is locked at 20:30, so you need to make sure you have left before then. There is ample on-street parking around the park if you wish to pay and display. Pay and Display charges may cease at 6pm.

Registration will be in the Go Outdoors car park. Start and Finish are located in Central Park, which is just across the Inner Ring Road from the car park. Please use the pedestrian crossing at the traffic lights to go between parking and the courses.

The Map

The map is an ISSOM map surveyed for Triple Gloucester 2015, and updated selectively for the 2016 league race, and this event. It is A3 size, printed on waterproof paper at a scale of 1:5,000. Please note that under ISSOM rules thick black and dark green lines represent features that MUST NOT BE CROSSED.

We will use SportIdent(SI) electronic timing. You can hire a timing chip if you do not have your own. Controls will be secured to fixed objects, and represented by a small plate about 6 x 8 inches in size, bearing the O-flag and the control number. The SI unit will be attached to the plate or adjacent to it. Controls will not be marked with the standard kite.

The following courses will be available:

  • Long     6.0 km straight line, about 8.1km optimum route and negligible climb
  • Short     3.6 km straight line, about 5.25km optimum route and negligible climb
  • Junior/Sprint 1.6 km straight line, 1.9km optimum route and no climb
  • 1 hour Score     500 points available

The Junior/Sprint course is contained entirely within the pedestrianised Central Park, and is suitable for unaccompanied under 16 years old runners. The course standard is tricky yellow/easy orange, and uses standard SI controls and stakes. All other courses cross residential roads, and also the main streets through the town, in various places. Runners under 16 years of age may not run these courses unless accompanied by an adult.

As stated above all courses except the Junior cross main roads. Runners must be aware of, and allow for, fast moving traffic, as well as other pedestrians, and cyclists who may be on the pavements.

Timings and Fees

Registration and starts: 18:00 – 19:00. You may start as soon as you are ready after registering.

Fees: Seniors £5, plus £1 timing chip hire if required. Juniors £2, timing chip hire free.
Lost timing chips will be charged at £35.
