The event will be signed from the B4070, at the junction with a minor road that leads to Cranham village, GR SO913122 postcode GL4 8HG. This minor road is quite narrow, twisty and steep, so take care. Turn left onto a minor road signposted to Sheepscombe. We are using Cranham Cricket Club’s ground, above Cranham Common. Please make sure that you do not drive on the pitch.

There will be toilets available.

Lidar-based 1:10000 map on waterproof paper, covering an area including Cranham and Buckholt Woods as well as the recently added Cooper’s Hill, only mapped last year. The scale is 1:10000 with 5m contours. Control descriptions are on the map, but also available loose at registration.

Buckholt and Cranham Woods comprise wooded hillsides, in places quite steep.

Cooper’s Hill is steep sided but with a large flat hill top which is the site of High Brotheridge Camp, an ancient hill fort. Here the forest is very runnable.

NB Due to restrictions at this time of year to protect rare plants and animals in Buckholt Wood, competitors as asked to stick to paths in this part of the map (apart from where controls are a short distance from the path!). This is where the yellow and orange courses are, as well as the start and finish of the green and blue courses. This restriction does not apply once green and blue courses have crossed over to the N side of Buckholt Road, Cooper’s Hill.

There are 5 courses.

  • Blue: 5.7 km, 260 m climb, 15 controls (hard, for experienced orienteers)
  • Green: 3.9 km, 190 m climb, 13 controls (hard, for experienced orienteers)
  • Orange: 2.7 km, 115 m climb, 9 controls (medium, suitable for adult beginners and improvers)
  • Yellow: 2.0 km, 80 m climb, 11 controls (easy, suitable for children)

NB Unusually, there will not be a string course at this event due to area restrictions

The start is a 750m walk from the parking area which crosses a minor road. The route will be taped from the parking field and competitors should use this route to avoid crossing the road close to a bend and to avoid adders on the common. The finish is close to the start and return to the parking field is via the same route. Do not forget to download after your walk back.

Blue and Green courses also cross Buckholt Road onto Cooper’s Hill and crossing points are not manned. Please take care crossing the road!

NB Eight of the controls on the blue and green courses N of Buckholt Road are within the area of the ancient monument. We are not able to use control stakes here and so they will be attached to trees!

We are using SportIdent(SI) electronic timing. You can hire an SI chip if you do not have your own.

Registration and starts: 11:30 – 13:30
Courses close: 15:00
Entry: £5 Seniors (£6 for non-BOF members), £2 Juniors. SI Hire: £1 seniors, free for Juniors, £35 charge if you lose one.

All competitors should familiarise themselves with the risk assessment, which will be found at registration, before their run.

All competitors take part at their own risk. A whistle is compulsory for juniors and advised for seniors.

There are many steep slopes in the area, some of which may be wet and slippery. The area is used by walkers, horse riders and mountain bikers so please be courteous and give way should you encounter any.
