There are many different levels of orienteering events on offer, from small local training ones to multi-day international events. Different events offer different kinds of courses, and whilst at some events you will choose a course identified by a colour – yellow, green, blue etc – at others you will enter in a particular class – usually age related – which will detemine which course you will run. On top of all that, there are also different types of orienteering events – sprint events, middle distance events, night events, long distance events and so on – the names are pretty self-explanatory.
Confusing, eh? The British Orienteering Newcomer’s Guide provides an informative summary of all this.
