Volunteer Development

Hi, I’m Hilary and have just been appointed as NGOC’s Volunteer Co-ordinator. I’ve been tasked to encourage my fellow NGOC members to assist at events in order to build up our club’s helper resource – no experience required! It’s also a very good opportunity to get to know other members better.

The first thing I must point out is: YOU WILL GET A RUN as there is an hourly shift system/rota. Secondly: the club won’t ask you to help out at every event – the more volunteers we have the better.

An NGOC event takes place with volunteers in roles such as:
• registration (with Carol)
• download (assisting Pat/John)
• car parking
• start
• road crossings
• collecting in controls
• first aid
• Planner
• Organiser
• Controller
Most tasks have a team leader who will show you what to do.

When I first joined NGOC a couple of years ago, I wanted to get involved but didn’t want to give up my run. Then I learnt you can do both as roles are split into shifts. You also get to meet the stalwarts of the club and are privy to their knowledge and experience – many a useful tip has been collected!

So, it would be great if you could drop me a line and let me know:
• if you have helped out before and with what (including planning and organising);
• if not, would you be happy for an NGOC event Organiser to approach you?
• anything you would like to add eg only free on Sundays?
Please also reply if you are a ‘seasoned’ helper detailing your experience.

The ‘officials’ of events are the Planner, Organiser and Controller. You can be one too! Let me know if you would like to find out more.
